Our environment is changing at a rapid pace. Globalization, digitalization in combination with massive geopolitical, climatic and societal changes are resulting in unknown upheavals, creating new challenges following the end of the Cold War.
A significant element of accelerated changes nowadays are globally circulating data streams, which enable anyone to spread knowledge, but also ignorance, from almost any corner of the world – in many cases with fatal consequences for the respective societies. A religiously influenced post, recorded in the Middle East with a state-of-the-art smartphone – broadcasted through the web right into the heads of those who are blinded by it – may lead to radicalization and end in a horrible act of terror, which divides society and, as a washback effect, helps populists and extremists of all kinds to gain power.
The aforementioned example can only work if it is combined with a wide variety of factors, each considered individually in the Western context until now, but never in combination. It is difficult to imagine for Western theorists that Stone Age Islamists utilize state-of-the-art Western technologies, that are in fact forbidden according to religious interpretation, and use them, with maximum effectiveness, against the West. In order to comprehend such a scenario, it requires the fusion of a wide variety of disciplines across the natural sciences and the humanities. Theologians, educators, and ethicists alike have to put themselves at least superficially in the shoes of the climate scientist, programmer, and electrical engineer to understand the big picture; supplemented by the expertise of culturally experienced and internationally active media professionals to fully grasp all the main elements of an interplay that massively influences the way we live, work, and act politically.
This interplay, the merger of technology, religion and dogmatics, as well as the everlasting possibility to spread media content regardless of territorial, financial and political influences, is the primary challenge of the 21st century – on a global as well as on a local level.
